Mayor halts Plough Lane development plans

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has put the brakes on AFC Wimbledon plans to move into Plough Lane, ordering a new public hearing into the scheme after studying the existing scheme and finding it wanting.

The planning application, which includes a dense 602-home development, a 20k-seat stadium, a supermarket, club shop, creche, and new squash and fitness studios, has been ‘called in’, which effectively overturns Merton Council’s approval of the Galliard Homes/AFCW project on December 10, 2015.

A letter to Merton borough planners lays out the ‘sound planning reasons’ for the mayor’s intervention, which include  ‘significant issues of controversy that require full consideration in a pubic hearing’. Given that there will be a Mayoral election in May, it looks likely that should that hearing take place this year, it will be later rather than sooner.
