Cars and ‘hounds act to ‘save’ Wimbledon stadium

AFC Wimbledon and Galliard Homes have won approval from Merton council to redevelop the Plough Lane site (decision awaiting ratification from the Mayor of London), but current users of the site are not taking the change of use lying down.

More than 10,000 stock car racing supporters have signed a petition calling for retention of the site at its home in SW19. Losing the Wimbledon track will leave the capital without a site for the sport, they protest.

Greyhound enthusiasts are also keeping up their fight, calling on the Mayor to rethink plans that would see London’s last remaining dog track disappear. The Sun newspaper’s racing desk is backing the campaign.
